Things I’ve Learned in September

  • On my cello I learned the final tricky movement of a Vivaldi sonata, half of another piece, and how to play in two new positions, along with some three octave scales.
  • Curious one day about how people started eating mayonnaise in the first place (I don’t particularly enjoy the condiment myself)  I read a short history of mayonnaise, which originated in Mediterranean Europe, most likely in Spain,  where olive oil and eggs were plentiful and available to make a rich sauce. It then became popular in French culture and spread from there.
  •  On a still, quiet night, we can hear high school football games (a couple of miles away) from our house.  We can hear the pep band too.  I noticed this a few weeks ago when YaYa was off playing in pep band and I was sitting in my office, listening to the game sounds.  I thought, “That’s my baby!  Playing in pep band!”  Never mind the fact that she doesn’t really enjoy playing in pep band because she’s relegated to the saxophone instead of her oboe.
  • I read that Target is considering background music for shoppers.  I think this is a terrible move.  For years I’ve been shopping at Target especially because it does NOT have background music and the store aisles are not filled with displays.  I really seek a shopping experience that is quiet, calm and not overwhelming.  Their preliminary trials and interviews with shoppers suggested that background music had a positive effect on the retail experience, or that shoppers simply didn’t notice the background music as they were shopping. I would definitely notice.   Target is one of the only places I do actually occasionally go shopping, and background music, coupled with the fact that I feel overwhelmed after shopping, might just be the straw that sends me completely over to online shopping on Amazon.com.
  • My eldest child taught me how to copy and paste text using command C and command V.  I usually highlight the text and go to the menu and click “copy” or “paste.”  I’m pretty fast at working that way because that’s the way I’ve done it for like 30 years, but it drives her insane.  You know you are getting old when your children know their way around technology better than you do.
